It is with pleasure that I wish to present a resume on the activities that took place at Royal College , Colombo 07, on the 07th April 2017. The Royal College Doctors’ Association in collaboration with the Interact Club of Royal College conducted a medical clinic for the benefit of the non-academic staff of the College.

A medical team comprising of over twenty general practitioners and specialist physicians and surgeons, all of whom were past pupils of Royal College serving in different parts of the country voluntarily attended to give off their valuable services at no cost. The Senior Deputy Principal Mr. P. Wickramasinghe, Assistant Principal Mr. Ashoka Galahitiyawa Dr. Ajith Tennakoon, President, Royal College Doctors’ Association and Mr. Athula Munasinghe,  Secretary, Royal College Union were present on the occasion.

A Total of over 100 non academic staff members were screened. The intention of the clinic was to ensure that the non academic staff members are healthy, hale and hearty to perform their day to day functions effectively.

At this screening three persons were found to be afflicted with Diabetes Mellitus, and three cases with hypertension. It was also revealed that there were three cases with chronic obstructive pulmonary problems who were immediately treated with medicinal inhalers putting them at ease.

As a result of the intensive screening the medical team was able to detect three persons suffering from Haemorrhoids, three persons afflicted with Varicose veins. In addition it was detected that two others had enlarged goitres needing treatment.

Out of the female staff screened it was detected that four ladies were having gynaecological problems. These persons were all directed for specialist treatment to appropriate clinics as required.

It was very salutary to note that apart from physical ailments, persons who were found obese with a high body mass index, potentially at a health hazard stage were given medical advice regarding dietary habits to be followed and appropriate referrals were made to Healthy Lifestyle Centres for  follow up processes to ameliorate the typical situations and conditions.

As far as the problems connected with the eye care of the staff the ophthalmologists had found staff requiring vision corrections, and those needing spectacles were donated such on the 09th of May 2017. The Spectacles were donated by Dr. Manilka Sumanatilake, Consultant Endocrinologist.

This event was organised by Dr. Charitha Wijesiriwardana and Dr. Pubudu Jayasara.
